CanExport SMEs: Export Grants for Canadian Small Businesses (2026)

CanExport SMEs can reimburse up to half the cost of breaking into new export markets, up to $50,000. Here is how it works and what changed for 2026-27.

CanExport SMEs: Export Grants for Canadian Small Businesses (2026)

If you are ready to sell beyond Canada, CanExport SMEs is one of the most useful federal grants going. It reimburses up to half the cost of entering new international markets. The program changed meaningfully for 2026-27, so here is how it works now.

Who this is for

Small and medium Canadian businesses that want to grow exports into markets where they do not already have significant sales. As of 2026-27 the bar to apply is higher than it used to be, so read the eligibility below carefully before you plan around it.

How CanExport works

The details shift between intakes, so confirm the current rules before you apply, but the shape of the program is steady.

Funding amount Up to $50,000

A single project can receive up to $50,000 to help you break into new export markets. It is a reimbursement, so you spend first and claim eligible costs back afterward.

Cost share Covers up to 50%

The program covers up to half of your eligible costs, and you cover the rest. That split keeps it accessible while asking you to have real skin in the game.

New eligibility for 2026-27 3+ staff, $300K+ revenue

The minimum bar rose. You now generally need at least 3 full-time employees and at least $300,000 in annual revenue, up from 1 employee and $100,000. Confirm you clear it before applying.

Target markets US or international, up to 5

A project now targets either the U.S. or other international markets, but not both, with up to five target markets. Each country counts as one market.

What it pays for Market-entry costs

Trade shows, market research, adapting marketing and packaging, translation, protecting intellectual property abroad, and business travel. For 2026-27 the travel per diem rose to $600 and some vehicle costs became eligible.

Agriculture moved. Agriculture and agri-food export activities are no longer funded through CanExport SMEs. They now sit under the separate AgriMarketing Program, so if you are in food or farming, look at our agriculture funding guide instead. Decisions on standard applications are made in about 60 business days, and U.S.-focused projects in about 90.

How to apply

  1. Confirm you meet the new bar. At least 3 full-time staff and $300,000 in revenue. If you are under it, look at other market-development supports first.
  2. Pick your markets and plan. Decide whether you are targeting the U.S. or other international markets, then list up to five countries and the activities behind them.
  3. Build a clear budget. CanExport wants specific, eligible costs. Vague line items slow approval, so break them down.
  4. Apply before you spend. Applications go through the Trade Commissioner Service, and costs incurred before approval are not covered.
